McKinsey: AI could force 11 million U.S. workers to change jobs in next 10 years

The Economic Intelligence Agency reported on the 29th that research by McKinsey & Company shows that over the next decade, for American workers, massive unemployment caused by artificial intelligence (AI) may not be the biggest threat; a greater challenge will be helping millions of people transition into new job vacancies.

The report, released on Tuesday, indicates that by 2035, approximately 11 million U.S. workers (about 7% of the current workforce) may need to change careers due to AI. This suggests that the annual number of career transitions in the U.S. could triple over the next decade, compared to the historical average of about 215,000 people.

McKinsey's analysis points out that the transition will be extremely difficult for many, with six out of seven workers requiring extensive retraining and facing potential income decline.

Report authors mentioned that workers are not easily replaceable. Even if job opportunities are abundant, millions of people could still face unemployment if the skills required, job locations, or compensation differ significantly from their previous positions.

McKinsey's research found that full-time employees most likely to be forced to change jobs are concentrated in three major areas: office and administrative support, retail sales, and transportation and logistics, including positions such as customer service representatives, cashiers, and warehouse workers. The report estimates that low-income workers are almost eight times more likely to need to change jobs than high-income workers. (rc)
